Danny loaded the last CD-Rom into the computer drawer and booted up the software. Yogi stood behind him and watched over his shoulders. Danny spoke as his fingers flew over the keyboard. He was in his element. “The software has an Oracle database sitting behind the front interface. Each data point represents a crime and each data point has fields to capture the specifics of that crime. See these fields: address, incident, MO, weapon, and so on? They were designed for the police to enter all the case information. The software runs the data through an algorithm that evaluates the data string in different combinations and looks for spatial patterns.” He looked over his shoulder to see if Yogi understood. Yogi had the same bewildered expression on his face most adults did when he started talking about computers.

“Umm,” Yogi stammered, “could you give me that again in English?”

“It compares all the facts you put in, finds similarities, and then graphs any patterns it recognizes.”

“Okay,” Yogi said. “That I understood. What does it plot the points on?”

“In our case, Cruces.” Danny hit a key and a map of the town popped up.

“I’d better get a cup of coffee,” Yogi said. “It’s going to take a while to enter all this data.”

“No, it won’t,” Danny replied. He pushed back his chair and rolled the computer as close as he could to the wall map. “I removed the simple map the programmers used for the background.” He looked around to make sure no one was near. “I reprogrammed it to go online, open my access to a beta-test of a new service called MapQuest, and project its findings on top of it.” He clicked a location on the city map that matched one of the pushpins. A database window appeared and the address of the location he had clicked filled the first cell. “We only have to fill in what happened at each spot.”

Yogi whistled and patted Danny’s shoulder. “That’s pretty impressive.”

The weight of Yogi’s resting hand brought a smile to Danny’s face. It reminded him of the times when his dad used to check his homework. His father would stand behind him as he explained his answers. If he did well, his dad would gently squeeze his shoulder. It was a simple gesture that meant approval and acceptance to a geeky boy needing both. Yogi’s touch brought back those same feelings of praise and recognition for a job well done. As if drawing strength from the contact, Danny sat up a little straighter as he typed.

Yogi removed his hand and pulled up a chair to sit. “How did you get so good at writing code and programming computers?”

“Living out in the boonies like we did, I didn’t have anyone to play with. I met a lot of friends while playing on the Internet. They taught me stuff.” He blushed at the little white lie and focused on inputting more data.

The truth was that after his dad’s death, Danny had buried himself in his room.
